Housing organisations can now rapidly screen their buildings for off-site renovation suitability using a new, easy-to-use self-assessment tool developed through Reno Tides, a project by Energiesprong. The tool supports early decision-making and helps organisations prioritise the right buildings for energy-saving improvements, before investing in costly feasibility studies.
The launch follows research by project partner Saxion University of Applied Sciences, which indicates that nearly 60% of Dutch terraced homes may be well suited for industrialised renovation using highly insulated panels.
In France, project partner Pouget Consultants carried out a similar assessment on a random sample of 250 buildings and found that off-site façade renovation potential depends strongly on building type. For buildings constructed between 1945 and1974, up to 20% of single-family homes, 40% of medium-sized apartment buildings and 60% of large apartment buildings showed “good to excellent potential”.
Fast and user-friendly tool
The Early-stage Off-Site Façade Self-Assessment Tool helps users identify buildings that are suitable for off-site façade renovation and flags “dealbreakers” at an early stage. Developed by Pouget Consultants, the Excel-based tool is designed for non-technical teams: most questions can be answered from the office, with only a limited number requiring basic building knowledge or a short site visit.
Tested by housing leaders in Europe
Built on architectural, technical and environmental criteria proven in earlier projects, the tool guides users from the surrounding context to the plot and finally the building itself. It has been successfully tested by large social housing organisations in France, Italy and Belgium, as well as a leading construction group with extensive off-site renovation experience in medium and large apartment buildings. The same methodology can also be applied at portfolio level in a lighter version, helping housing organisations quickly identify the best assets for industrial renovation
EU-funded collaboration
Reno Tides is a European collaboration funded by the EU’s LIFE Programme for environmental and climate action. Running from October 2024 to October 2027, the project unites partners from Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Lithuania, and Austria to tackle one of Europe’s major challenges: how to keep deep energy renovations moving forward despite rising costs and financial uncertainty.
How to get involved
Reno Tides welcomes interest from organisations working on off-site façade renovation, including social housing providers, general contractors, engineering companies, architects and supply chain partners.
