Scaling Innovation for Sustainable Housing
Energiesprong Italy focuses on creating affordable, integrated, and safe retrofit solutions for social housing. Managed by the non-profit organization Edera, it tackles Italy's unique challenges - such as seismic risks, summer cooling and historical architecture - while driving energy-efficient renovations through collaboration with public and private stakeholders.

Goals and approach
Energiesprong Italy is led by Edera, an innovation centre established in 2020. Its shareholders include the National Association of Constructors ANCE, real estate social housing developer Redo and FHS – Social Housing Foundation, an organisation dedicated to research, consultancy and participation practices.
The Italian market development team (MDT) initially focused on the supply side, working with over 30 solution providers and integrating them into production chains that developed the first Italian catalogue of offsite renovation solutions.
Energiesprong Italy launched its first pilot in 2022, a private home with five dwellings transformed into an energy positive building. It was followed by 4 public housing towers of 200 dwellings that have been retrofitted using biobased materials. The programme has since expanded to support 15 housing organisations managing over 150,000 homes.
Italy's specific challenges, such as seismic risks and a need for high architectural quality, have been integrated into the retrofit solutions. The MDT is now scaling its approach with several ongoing pilots on more that 500 dwellings and support from design studios.

Future initiatives include projects RenovA (supporting the creation of one stop shop for local public administrations) and AREC (developing circular solutions with bio based materials).

Funding
Energiesprong Italy is funded through seven EU projects, with plans to increase to nine in the near future. Additional funding comes from investments by solution providers and decarbonisation projects such as Energiesprong Milano, funded by Fondazione Cariplo, which aims to develop innovative models for the retrofitting of the real estate assets of the Municipality of Milan.
